The True History of Dove Chocolate

The story of Dove Chocolate begins in the heart of Chicago, where Leo Stefanos, a Greek-American entrepreneur, set up Dove Candies & Ice Cream on a bustling street corner.

His aim was simple: to bring a touch of sweetness to the residents of Chicago’s South Side.

Leo Stefanos was not just a businessman but also a caring father. His concern for his son Mike’s safety led him to innovate.

Witnessing Mike chase an ice cream van down a busy street, Leo was inspired to create a new kind of ice cream that could be enjoyed safely within the confines of his own store.

After extensive experimentation, he succeeded in crafting the DoveBar, an ice cream bar enveloped in chocolate.

The family business saw a transition in 1977 when Leo passed the reins to his son Mike. Under Mike’s leadership, the brand gained national attention.

However, a pivotal moment came in 1984 when the DoveBar was showcased at the Fancy Foods Show in Washington, D.C., leading to a surge in orders from across the country.

In 1986, the brand caught the eye of Mars, Incorporated, which recognized the potential of DoveBar and acquired the business. This marked the beginning of Dove Chocolate’s journey as a nationwide sensation.

The brand continued to innovate, adding inspirational messages inside the wrappers of Dove Promises in 1991.

Over the years, Dove Chocolate expanded its product line to include a variety of flavors and even ventured into collaborations for social causes, such as partnering with the CARE organization in 2016 to support women in cocoa-growing communities in Côte d’Ivoire.

Today, the brand continues to be a household name, offering an extensive range of chocolate products that cater to diverse tastes worldwide!
