The True History of Brach’s Candy

In 1904, Emil J. Brach opened a small candy store in Chicago, investing his $1,000 life savings. He named it “Brach’s Palace of Sweets.” 

Brach and his sons Edwin and Frank began producing candy, starting with just one kettle. Their strategy of investing in more equipment allowed them to sell candy at lower prices than competitors, significantly boosting their production.

By 1911, Brach’s production had soared to 50,000 pounds of candy weekly. A new factory was constructed in 1921 at 4656 West Kinzie Street, consolidating their operations. This facility was recognized as the world’s largest candy-manufacturing plant at its peak.

Tragedy struck in 1948 when an explosion at the factory killed 11 employees. However, reconstruction efforts soon brought the plant’s capacity to over 4 million pounds of product annually. Brach’s product range included several candy bars before World War II, but the focus shifted to bulk and bagged candies post-war.

The introduction of the Pick-A-Mix concept in 1958 revolutionized candy retail. Customers could select from various bulk items, paying a single price per pound. This concept modernized the traditional method of candy purchasing.

American Home Products Corporation acquired Brach’s in 1966. By 1986, Brach’s dominated two-thirds of the U.S. bagged candy market. After Klaus Jacobs purchased the company in 1987, Brach’s faced significant challenges, including a drastic drop in sales and internal restructuring.

In 1994, Brach’s merged with the Brock Candy Company, later becoming Brach’s Confections. The company changed hands again in 2003 when Barry Callebaut AG purchased it. Today, Brach’s is a brand of Ferrara Candy Company, continuing its legacy in the candy industry.
