Originally made by Leominster Potato Chip Company in 1908, Tri-Sum is still in production today!

How potato chips are made is every brand’s biggest secret, and rightfully so! Nonetheless, the overall process is pretty well-known, and this is how they’re made, in general. So if you’ve always wondered how it gets done, then keep reading to discover the core process! 

First, it all begins on a farm where special potatoes are grown exclusively for chip brands. These types of potatoes must be long-shaped, which makes them easy to slice. Also, they must be high in starch and low in sugar; this is to ensure that they remain fluffy in the middle and lightly browned on the outside when fried.

After this, the potatoes are collected and shipped to the chip company. From there, the potatoes are stored in a temperature and humidity-controlled environment. This is important because the starch will turn into sugar if they’re not stored this way.

Next, the potatoes are power-washed and peeled. The potatoes will then move along a conveyor belt where they’re sliced thin like a chip and then washed again. Once they are cleaned off again, the potatoes are dropped in vegetable oil at 375ºF. 

Now that the potatoes are fried to perfection, the next step is to add flavors, weigh them, package them, and then shipped to warehouses all over the US and beyond. That’s pretty much it, that’s the basics to making potato chips by millions!
