Discover Everything There’s To Know About 3 Musketeers

There are some candy bars that require no introduction, and the 3 Musketeers is one of them! Besides being iconic in its own right and named after the popular story of 3 vagabond friends, the candy bar was devoured by nearly 6 million Americans in 2020.

So for those of you who haven’t had the distinct pleasure of sampling this delectable treat, the 3 Musketeers is a candy bar consisting of nougat wrapped in a thin layer of creamy milk chocolate. While it’s available in a variety of different flavors, it’s hard to beat the classic combination that the company originally started with. But then again, who hasn’t tried this candy bar?!

Origin of the Sweet Name

The 3 Musketeers Chocolate Bar was the third product/brand created by Mars in 1932, following M&Ms and the Mars Bar. However, back then when you purchased a 3 Musketeers bar, you didn’t receive one long piece, you received 3 smaller bite-sized pieces. In fact, that’s where the name came from – 3 pieces for 3 Musketeers! These 3 pieces were flavored vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry. You can also learn more about Mars candy by checking out our other posts on this iconic candy brand.

How History Molded This Chocolate

During World War 2, 3 Musketeers transformed into the bar that we know and love today. Previously known as a bar that could be shared with 2 of your closest friends, due to sugar rations two of the three flavors were discontinued. It was simply too expensive to produce all three flavors. Soon, only the chocolate bars remained. Not to mention, this was the most popular flavor, so chocolate remained.

Regardless of the change and reduction of flavors, 3 Musketeers was still the most popular candy bar during the war. Back then, a bar cost 5¢, which would be the equivalent of $1.00 today. Even though the bar has been around for several decades, the recipe is still the same, meaning this candy bar is original in every sense of the word; one bite, and you’ll instantly be taken down memory lane!

Nougat Like Ice Cream

A big component of the famous candy bar is nougat. Nougat was often chosen to be used in candy bars due to its similarity in consistency and flavor to ice cream. It was quite common and popular to freeze nougat-based candy bars in order to mimic ice cream when eaten. If you haven’t tried this yet, we highly recommend placing your 3 Musketeers bars in the freezer! Indeed, you won’t regret the experience!

So Good It Deserved More Flavors

In 2007, Mars decided to introduce a myriad of different flavors and variations of the iconic 3 Musketeers candy bar. Some of the flavors included mint, mocha cappuccino, strawberry, and French vanilla, which was later followed in 2008 by cherry, raspberry, and orange. Now, fans can pick and choose which flavor they want based on their mood or even the season.

Mint Wins Second Place

Next to the classic chocolate flavor, mint quickly became the second favorite of the American public. The flavor was introduced in 2007 as a limited-edition flavor to celebrate the bar’s 75th anniversary. Mint-chocolate whipped nougat was enveloped in a rich creamy dark chocolate for many to enjoy. Although hard to find, nonetheless, it still comes around from time to time, so make sure you keep an eye out for the legendary Mint-flavored 3 Musketeers Candy Bar! Trust us, it’s an experience that you don’t want to miss!

3 Musketeers on TV

Over the years, the 3 Musketeers have enjoyed plenty of airtime, especially if you grew up in the 50s watching Howdy Doody! As you may remember, Buffalo Bob had a huge love for the 3-in-one candy bar, also known as the 3 Musketeers!

More recently, the 3 Musketeers candy bar was featured on its own YouTube channel. That’s right; Mars created a YouTube channel that you can view here. Follow three teenagers’ experiences with the candy bar and discover how it’s impacted and influenced their lives. The most recent video is a collaboration between the candy bar and the very popular media company Buzzfeed.

3 Musketeers Today

As mentioned above, the 3 Musketeers Candy Bar today hasn’t deviated much from the original one created in 1932. While back then there were three flavors, you can now choose between dozens of flavors! So as you can see, it’s been nearly a century since the initial release of this candy bar, yet this brand continues to reinvent itself and, at the same time, remain original.

A True American Candy Bar

This candy started with its inception in the U.S. and continues to be produced in the United States (with the exception of Canada). With manufacturing companies in Illinois and Pennsylvania, the candy stays close to home.

Even closer, the 3 Musketeers can easily be made from the comfort of your home. The nougat is made by whipping egg whites and then adding sugar syrup. Once it’s whipped to the desired consistency, additional flavors and ingredients are added, which can differ based on the creator’s imagination!

Nonetheless, the nougat is then baked on a cooking sheet. It’s later cut into your preferred sizes. Afterward, the nougat is then draped with milk or dark chocolate. Last but not least, it’s time to enjoy homemade 3 Musketeers!
