Founded by an English immigrant in Bloomfield, New Jersey, Smarties candy debuted in 1949 The tablet-shaped, pressed candies were produced on a repurposed pellet machine. The candy tablets are packaged together as small rolls in plastic wrappers. The manufacturer, then known as Ce De Candy, opened a factory in Toronto, Canada in 1963. Today, the company works around the clock producing 2.5 billion candy rolls each year.
A safe candy for a variety of restrictive diets, Smarties candy is peanut-free, gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan. The company has participated in various social causes, including "say no to drugs" campaigns and supporting the Children's Defense Fund. In 2013, the company launched its "Smarties Think" campaign. The campaign's aim is to bring awareness to classrooms in need and promote education.
