The History of Hershey’s Chocolate As We Know It Today

Formally known as the Hershey Chocolate Co., Hershey Chocolate Corporation, Hershey Foods, and now The Hershey Company, which we think fits best. 

The Hershey Company is an American chocolate manufacturer founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1894. Mr. Hershey initially started his career in the confectionery business by operating a small candy shop in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. However, he eventually sold the shop and used the proceeds to build a larger candy factory in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. 

Then in 1900, Hershey introduced his first mass-produced chocolate product, the Hershey’s Milk Chocolate Bar. Moving forward, the company would continue to expand and innovate, until it eventually became the largest chocolate manufacturer in the world.

Throughout its history, The Hershey Company would go on to acquire several companies including Scharffen Berger Chocolate Maker, Krave Jerky, Lily’s Sweets, ONE Brands, Leaf Candy Company  Amplify Snack Brands, Pirate’s Booty, Dot’s Homestyle Pretzels and Pretzels Inc.
